As a mandatory and vital component of the 2nd BHMS curriculum under the National Commission for Homoeopathy (NCH) guidelines, the Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology at Vidhyadeep Homoeopathic Medical College & Research Centre (VHMCRC) organized a comprehensive educational visit to the Kim Police Station in Kim. Led by esteemed faculty guides Dr. Unnati S. Patel and Ms. Nikita Goswami, the visit was designed to provide students with a practical perspective on the intersection of medicine and the law. For many students, this served as their first professional introduction to the operational environment of law enforcement, transforming theoretical knowledge from textbooks into a tangible understanding of how the Indian justice system functions in tandem with the medical community.
During the session, students were given a detailed walkthrough of standard police procedures that are essential for medical practitioners to understand. This included the process of registering a First Information Report (FIR), the classification and handling of Medico-Legal Cases (MLC), and the legal formalities involved in various types of inquests, commonly known as Panchnama. The police personnel at Kim Station explained the critical importance of the "chain of custody" for physical evidence, demonstrating how medical reports and forensic findings serve as the backbone of criminal investigations and subsequent court trials. By observing these protocols, students learned how a doctor's meticulous documentation can directly impact the delivery of justice.
Furthermore, the visit emphasized the ethical and statutory duties of a homoeopathic physician. The faculty guides facilitated discussions on relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), specifically those concerning accidental deaths, suspected poisonings, and physical assaults. Students gained insights into the role of a medical officer as an expert witness and the significance of maintaining professional ethics when dealing with legal authorities. This immersive experience at Kim Police Station not only reinforced the students' academic foundation in Forensic Medicine and Toxicology but also prepared them for the complex medico-legal challenges they will inevitably encounter in their future careers. Such initiatives by Vidhyadeep Homoeopathic Medical College ensure that their graduates are not only skilled clinicians but also well-informed, responsible citizens of the medical fraternity.
