The Civil Engineering Department organized a 2-days hands-on workshop on "Non-
Destructive Testing (NDT) of Concrete Structures" on 27th and 28th March 2026 from 10:00
AM to 3:00 PM at Smart Room A-114 and Concrete Lab B-06.
The workshop was conducted by Mr. Shivang Dabhi, Technical Manager at PTH Consultancy
Services LLP, Surat. The primary objective of the workshop was to provide students with
practical exposure to advanced non-destructive evaluation techniques used in assessing the
integrity and performance of concrete structures.
In modern civil engineering practices, ensuring the structural safety, durability, and service life of
infrastructure is essential. Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods are widely used to evaluate
material properties, detect internal defects, and assess structural health without causing any
damage to the structure.
This workshop was designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and industrial practices
by integrating theoretical concepts with real-time field applications. It also highlighted the
importance of preventive maintenance, condition assessment, and quality control in construction.
The program encouraged students to develop analytical skills, technical competency, and industry readiness, enabling them to understand the practical challenges involved in structural
evaluation and maintenance.
Objectives:
- To introduce students to the fundamentals of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT).
- To provide hands-on experience with NDT equipment.
- To understand real-life applications of NDT in civil engineering.
- To enhance practical knowledge beyond theoretical concepts.
- To create awareness about structural health monitoring and safety.
Day 1 (27/03/2026):
The first day of the workshop focused on the theoretical foundation of Non-Destructive Testing
(NDT). The expert explained various NDT methods such as Rebound Hammer Test, Ultrasonic
Pulse Velocity (UPV) Test, and Core Testing concepts.
Students were introduced to the importance of assessing structural integrity, detecting cracks,
and evaluating material strength without damaging the structure. The session also included
discussion on industry standards, safety measures, and practical challenges.
Day 2 (28/03/2026):
The second day was dedicated to hands-on practical sessions in the concrete laboratory. Students
actively participated in performing NDT tests using actual equipment.
The expert demonstrated:
- Use of Rebound Hammer for surface hardness testing
- UPV equipment for internal quality assessment
- Interpretation of test results and reporting
Students gained real-time experience and learned how to analyse data obtained from tests.
